Depending on your reason for scheduling an appointment with us, we may request that certain diagnostic tests are done during your visit. Common diagnostic tests that may be performed include sinus CT scans and nasal endoscopies.
CT SCAN
A sinus CT scan is often necessary to visualize the area inside the nose and sinuses. This will assist your provider in obtaining the information necessary to create a comprehensive and effective treatment plan for you.
The CT scan is performed in our office and typically takes less than 5 minutes. Because the CT scan emits very low levels of radiation (equivalent to ~15 minutes of sunlight) the risk from a sinus scan is very small and is considered safe.
A CT of the sinuses may be ordered for a variety of reasons. We commonly use this form of imaging to evaluate complaints of snoring, congestion, ear and/or breathing problems. The CT scan can be used to show:
- Structural abnormalities such as a deviated septum, nasal polyps, or concha bullosa
- Sinus infection
- Inflammatory conditions
- Tumors or masses in the nasal and sinus cavities
- Assist with surgical planning by defining the anatomy inside the nose and sinuses
After the CT scan is completed, your provider will have immediate access to the images and will go over them with you in the exam room.
NASAL ENDOSCOPY
A nasal endoscopy is a procedure used to evaluate the nasal cavity and sinuses. This procedure is performed in the exam room using an instrument called a nasal endoscope. A nasal endoscope looks like a rigid, thin tube connected to a camera and light.
During the procedure, the provider will place the endoscope into your nostril and pass it through the nasal passages. This allows the inside of the nose, eustachian tube openings, and sinus openings to be visualized with a magnified high-quality view. The procedure is painless, although some patients do feel pressure during the procedure.
A nasal endoscopy may be used to:
- Evaluate nasal and sinus symptoms
- Diagnose infection that is localized to the sinus lining
- Visualize nasal polyps which may not be visible on CT scan
- Evaluate your response to medical therapy
- Obtain a sinus culture
- Remove a foreign body from the nose
- Assist in cauterizing blood vessels in the nose
- Perform post-surgical care such as nasal debridement
All nasal endoscopes are thoroughly sterilized before the procedure and will not cause infection.
